Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for. - Packing for the rotating shaft of a refrigerating machine &c., consists of a bronze &c. disc 7 making a ground joint with a collar 2 on the shaft, on which it is pressed by a spring disc 6. In order to prevent rotation of the disc 7, the spring 6 is formed with notches engaging notches in the disc 7 and in a liner 5 in the casing 4. The periphery of the disc 7 carries flexible packing, e.g. a cupleather 10 of leather, rubber or lead, secured between the disc 7 and a ring 9. The space above the spring 6 contains oil or glycerine.
