Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-A packing- device for the rotary shaft of a pump, blower, shock-absorber for motor vehicles &c., consists of a leather or other packing-ring 9, pressed by a gland 11 and washer 10 against a bevelled edge 6 on the shaft or on a part secured to the shaft and against a similar edge 7 on the casing or on a stationary bush 8. The surfaces forming the edges 6, 7 may be curved.
