Boat-lowering gear.-A jib b of outreach sufficient to enable a boat to be picked up from the opposite side of the ship and lowered clear of the side, even if the ship has a considerable list, is carried by pillar a and has a rearward extension b<1> on which is mounted the winch c for the falls controlled by a brake e. The jib is slued by worm-gearing l, i, k driving the spur wheel h which gears with the spur wheel g fast on the pedestal which supports the pillar a. In the case of wide ships, the jib may be provided with an extension n and an additional set of falls to enable the inboard boats to be picked up. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 4171/81, [Class 44, Fastenings, Lock &c.]; 17885/05, [Class 78, Lifting &c.], and 102,065, [Class 78 (iv), Loading &c.].
