Abstract
A painting aid for assisting the painting of surfaces adjacent non-painted surfaces comprises a roll of sheet material along which is provided a bend line. In use a length of the material is detached from the roll and is bent along the bend line so that it may be used to shield the non-painted surface, e.g. a fitted carpet. <IMAGE>
Description
PAINTING AID
This invention relates to painting aids and in particular to an aid whereby surfaces or materials not to be painted but lying adjacent surfaces to be painted can be shielded.
There is a particular difficulty when painting surfaces adjacent floor coverings to ensure that the paint is only applied to the desired surfaces and not to the floor covering.
It is an object of the invention to provide an aid for ensuring that only one surface of adjacent areas receives the paint during a painting operation.
According to the invention a painting aid comprises a length of non-porous sheet material, the length being provided adjacent one edge thereof and extending longitudinally of the length with a bend line whereby the material may be bent along the line so that the sheet material to one side of the line may be arranged to lie in a plane at an angle to the material to the other side of the line.
Preferably the sheet material adjacent one side of the bend line is stiffer than the rest of the sheet. This may be achieved by providing an increased thickness of material by, for example, laminating sheet material along said one edge, by coating the material to be stiffened or by forming the material with a thickened region to render it stiffer.
The sheet material is conveniently paper with suitable nonporous and non-absorbent properties so that paint does not pass therethrough.
Further features of the invention will appear from the following description of an embodiment of the invention given by way of example only and with reference to the drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 shows a perspective view,
Fig. 2 shows an end elevation,
Fig. 3 shows a perspective view of the use of the invention, and
Fig. 4 is a section showing use of the invention for skirtings.
Referring to the drawings and firstly to Figs. 1 and 2 part of a length 10 of sheet material is shown which may be unwound from a roll of the material and cut to the desired length dimension.
The length 10 is flexible lengthwise and across its width and has an overall width sufficient to prevent unwanted painting of a surface adjacent the surface to be painted, for example 10 cms wide.
Adjacent one edge of the material is formed a bend line 11 by scoring, crimping or other suitable means whereby a longitudinal bend is readily made between a narrow strip 12 at one side and the remainder of the length of material.
The strip 12 and the sheet adjacent the bend line 11 to the opposite side of the line 11 is formed as a stiffened area.
This may be achieved by affixing a stiffening strip 14 to the length 10 on the underside (as shown) or on the upper side.
The strip 14 may be of the same material as the length 10 and thicker (as shown) or of the same thickness, or otherwise.
Alternatively this stiffened area is formed by coating the area with a layer of plastics or other suitable substance on one or both sides. The coating may be formed by dipping into the coating material.
The length 10 and the strip 14 are of non-porous, nonabsorbent material, for example paper. Plastics material may also be used.
The length 10 may have one side edge located over the bend line 11 (as shown) or the edge of the length may terminate at the edge of the strip 14. In the former case the bend line 11 is located in the strip 14 only which may be pre-scored or crimped. In the latter case the strip 14 and/or the length 10 may be scored or crimped to form the bend line.
If plastics the material may be extruded or otherwise formed in one piece to provide a thicker strip 12, the bend line 11 being provided by thinner material or by a row of perforations.
In use the length 10 would normally be supplied flat widthwise and in a roll and the user would unwind and select a length and then effect a bend along the bend line 11 before use; aided by the scored or crimped line, if present. However the length could be prebent along line 11. In each case the length is used, bent along line 11, so that the strip 12 lies at an angle to the remainder of the length, as shown in Figs.
1 and 2.
Referring now to Figs. 3 and 4 the length 10 is arranged in use so that the strip 12 is lodged between the floor covering, usually a carpet 20 and underfelt 21, and a surface 22 (in the case of Fig. 4 a skirting 23) to be painted. The remainder of the length lies flat on the surface to be protected, e.g.
carpet surface.
After the surface 22 has been painted the length can be removed and either discarded or, after any paint has dried, it may be reused.
In the Fig. 3 arrangement the surface to be painted adjoins the stair treads 25.
The invention provides a simple and ready means for protecting surfaces against unwanted paint.
Claims (9)
1. A painting aid comprising a length of non-porous sheet material, the length being provided adjacent one edge thereof and extending longitudinally of the length with a bend line whereby the material may be bent along the line so that the sheet material at our side of the line may be arranged to lie in a plane at an angle to the material to the other side of the line,
2. A painting aid according to claim 1 wherein the sheet material adjacent one side of the bend line is stiffer than the rest of the sheet,
3. A painting aid according to claim 2 wherein the stiffer material is of greater thickness than the rest of the sheet,
4. A painting aid according to claim 3 wherein a layer of material is laminated to provide the stiffer material,
5. A painting aid according to claim 3 wherein the stiffer material is provided with a coating of material to render it stiffer.
6. A painting aid according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the bend line is provided by crimping or scoring along the bend line.
7. A painting aid according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the sheet material is formed of paper having non-porous and non-absorbent properties for the paint to be used.
8. A painting aid according to any one of the preceding claims wherein the length of sheet material is formed in a roll from which a selected amount of the material can be removed for use.
9. A painting aid substantially as described with reference to the drawings.
