Abstract

The invention relates to adhesive tape specifically intended for use as masking tape. The tape is double sided in as much as it has an adhesive coating on each surface of the tape but the adhesive portion and are not coextensive enabling the tape to be coiled into a roll without adhering to itself.

Description

SPECIFICATION Adhesive tape The present invention relates to adhesive products generally and more particularly to adhesive tape.
Agreatvariety offorms of adhesive tape are presently known and avialable on the market for various uses. Among these is masking tape which has a self adhesive coating on one side thereof and a silicone or other non-sticking coating on the opposite side thereof. Masking tape of this type is widely used in painting for covering areas not to be painted.
In practice, the masking tape defines the border of area area not to be painted and paper, such as newspaper, is affixed to the adhesive coating thereof for providing a relatively wide covered area, whose width greatly exceeds the width of the masking tape itself.
The above-described technique, although widely used, suffers from significant disadvantages since it is awkward to place the paper on the same side of the tape which is to be adhered to the protected area.
Either the paper has to be arranged and adhered to the tape as a first step and the tape must then be placed on the wall or other protected area, which is often difficult, or the tape must first be adhered along only a portion of its width to the protected area, and the portion ofthe adhesive covered surface must be pulled away from the wall and adhered to the paper. The second alternative often results in incomplete engagement of the tape to the protected area or the paper or both.
Double sided masking tape has been developed in an attempt to overcome the above-described difficulty of having to attach the paper to the underside of the tape but encounter other difficulties in that it sticks to itself when rolled and is difficult to grasp for stripping from a protected area.
The present invention seeks to provide adhesive tape which overcomes the various difficulties mentioned above and which is relatively inexpensive and easy to use.
There is thus provided in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention adhesive tape defining first and second opposite surfaces, a first portion of the first surface having formed thereon an adhesive coating and a second portion of the second surface having formed thereon an adhesive coating, the first and second portions being non-overlapping.
Further in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention the first and second surfaces are each elongate surfaces and the first and second portions are each elongate portions arranged adjacent oppostie edges of the tape.
The invention will be more fully understood and appreciated from the following detailed description taken in conjunction with the drawing which is a pictorial illustration of adhesive tape constructed and operative in accordance with the present invention.
Referring now to the drawing there is seen a strip of adhesive tape constructed and useful in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, the adhesive tape comprises a unitary substrate 10, typically formed of crepe paper or flat paper such as conventionally employed in the manufacture of masking tape. Unitary substrate 10 defines two opposite elongate surfaces 12 and 14.
In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention elongate strips 16 and 18 of respective opposite surfaces 12 and 14 are coated with a self adhesive coating such as a rubber based removable adhesive or any other suitable coating, which may or may not be conventional in the manufacture of masking tape. Strips 16 and 18 are not coextensive.
The non adhesive coated areas of the surfaces 12 and 14 are preferably coated with a non-stick coating such as silicone or a conventional coating such as PVB, GMS or wax.
In the illustrated embodiment, each of the strips is of a width equal to half the total width of the surface, such that half of each surface is adhesive coated and the two coated surfaces are not co-extensive and do not overlap. This is desired in order to prevent the adhesive sufaces from sticking to each other when rolled. In practice it may be desired to fix the width of each of the strips at slightly less than half the overall width of the surfaces in order to prevent sticking of adjacent adhesive surfaces due to inaccuracies in rolling. Alternatively, the width of the adhesive coated surfaces may be significantly more or less than half that of the surfaces. The adhesive coated surfaces may be located as desired on the tape surface. Normally it is desired that the adhesive coating extend inwardly from each extreme edge, but this need not necessarily be the case.As a further alternative, the adhesive coated areas need not necessarily be strips but may be discrete locations instead. The configuration of the adhesive coating on the opposite sides of the tape need not be the same.
According to an alternative embodiment of the invention, the adhesive tape may be formed of two substrates, each of which is formed with an adhesive coating on a surface thereof, the two substrates being joined in an offset orientation at mutually overlapping elongate edge surfaces having facing adhesive coatings.
It is desirable when the adhesive tape is formed of two substrates to roll it on a roller having opposite side walls 30 for protection of the adhesive tape during storage and shipping and for increased esthetic appeal since in this configuration, the layers of tape are not tightly bound to each other.
It will be appreciated by persons skilled in the art that the invention is not limited to what has been particularly shown and described hereinabove. The scope of the invention is defined only by the Claims which follow:
