Abstract
223,709. Bostock, F. J., and Moore, S. Bramley-. Sept. 21, 1923. Gear - cutting; milling-cutters. - A globoidal worm is generated by means of a straight-sided cutter T which reciprocates along a path DD inclined to the worm axis, and has at the same time a rotary movement about the axis C of the cooperating worm-wheel in conjunction with the rotation of the worm on its axis AA. Fig. 2 shows progressive positions of the cutter as the thread is generated. In a modification, Fig. 5, the worm may be cut by means of a non-reciprocating cutter T<3> having cutting-edges arranged progressively along the path DD, the cutter having as before a rotary movement about the worm-wheel axis. In another modification, the straight cutter-path is approximated by means of a milling-cutter of large diameter suitably inclined to the worm axis. In a further modification, the straight path is approximated by a portion of a helix. A worm formed as above described may be gashed and relieved to form a cutter for generating conjugate worm-wheels.
