Abstract

401,851. Gear cutting. REINECKER AKT.-GES., J. E., Chemnitz, Germany. Sept. 16, 1932, No. 25794. Convention date, Oct. 8, 1931. [Class 83 (iii).] In planing or generating double helical gears by means of Fellows pinion cutters x or rack tools, the separation of the chip 1 at the point of the herring-bone is facilitated by the provision of clearance holes 2 which are shaped to correspond with the tooth flanks. Preferably, the hole is of oval shape, Fig. 4, and is cut to a generated form by means of a straight sided conical cutter 2<1> arranged so that its generator b is inclined to the normal to the direction c at the pressure angle of the teeth. The cutter is moved tangentially while the blank is correspondingly rotated, the cutting being carried only so far as to generate a profile lying in the crest of the double helical tooth. Alternatively a formed milling-cutter having the shape of the gear profiles may be employed. The generating of the holes 2 may be effected as a separate operation or simultaneously with the gearplaning process.
