Abstract

Gear-wheels, grinding and trueing teeth of.- The teeth of a number of gear-wheels are finished simultaneously by assembling the wheels side by side in a group in yielding frictional engagement with each other, and imparting a rolling motion, or a combined rolling and axial motion, to the gears whilst in yielding intermesh wth a lapping- rack. The gears A are mounted on an arbor 2 and are pressed against an abutment 7 thereon by a spring 6. The arbor is mounted on bolts 9, 10 carried by a frame 8 which is reciprocated in guides 13, 14 over a lapping-rack 1; the direction of movement of the frame may be at rightangles to, or diagonally of, the rack teeth. In the case of large gears, the weight of these is sufficient to keep them in contact with the rack; in the case of small gears, such as those used for watch movements, the gears are pressed upon and moved over the rack by a reciprocating plate having an undersurface of felt, leather, rubber, &c., in contact with the gears, and' if necessary the plate carries an additional weight. The grinding of the teeth occurs by the wedging action of the rack teeth slightly rotating the gears relative to each other upon the arbor. Specification 206,576 is referred to.
