Friction gearing.-In disc and roller gearing, particularly for use with vertical or inclined spindles, the driving roller c engages with a driven disc b on a spindle a carried in a roller bearing r. The roller bearing allows the spindle to be lifted by a lever &c. to disconnect the drive but prevents spindle movement under the action of sudden shocks, such as those due to untrue running of the parts. In a construction in which the dise b slides on the spindle and is maintained by spring pressure in contact with the roller c, a collar or shoulder on the spindle is arranged immediately below the disc so that the spindle may be moved axially to disconnect the gearing.
