Spindle-driving apparatus; stop-apparatus, non-automatic.-In spinning and like machines in which each of the spindles is adapted to be stopped without stopping the machine or interfering with any other spindle, the lower portion 11 of each of the spindles is normally pressed downwards by a spring 13 acting on one side of a ball-race 12 so that driving contact is maintained between a member 10 on the spindle and the top face 9 of the wharl 6 which is rotated in ball bearings 8 in the spindle bolster 4. To stop the spindle a handle 17 is turned so as to raise the foot 11 of the spindle and thus disconnect the clutch members 9, 10 while simultaneously bringing a conical surface 18 on the spindle against a stationary braking surface,
