Abstract

960,251. Belt-gearing. SACO-LOWELL SHOPS. Oct. 5, 1960 [Oct. 5, 1959], No. 34173/60. Heading F2Q. [Also in Division D1] A spinning &c. machine comprises at least one pair of spindles, the spindles of each pair being oppositely arranged on two spacedapart rails with a drive-pulley between them, and a driving-tape with means to tension it, the tape having two surfaces one of high friction material in contact with the drivepulley and the other of low-friction material in contact with the whorls of the spindles. The high-friction material may be of rubber &c. and the low-friction surface of nylon "Dacron" (Registered Trade Mark) or " Orlon " (Registered Trade Mark) so that when one pulley is braked, the low-friction surface slips over the whorl and the drive to the other spindles is not interrupted. In Fig. 1 where one tape 34 drives a pair of spindles such as 12 arranged on rails 11, a driving pulley 18 is arranged between the spindles on a shaft 20 running parallel to the rails. Between each spindle and the pulley are arranged tensioning means comprising upper and lower pulleys 26, 28 on a bell-crank pivoted at 23 to a bracket on the corresponding rail, the two bell-cranks being interconnected by a spring 32. The tape passes around the lower part of pulley 18, around the top of pulley 36 and the bottom of pulley 28. The driving parts are enclosed by a shield 40 and doors 41, a fan on the driving-shaft serving to keep lint out.
