Abstract

A fire extinguisher valve has a ball held on a seat by a closing spring, the seat being formed by the intersection of smaller and larger diameter coaxial passages, the ball and spring being located by a cage in the larger passage, the smaller passage locating an operating member for opening the valve. <IMAGE>

Description

Valves for Fire Extinguishers This invention relates to valves for fire extinguishers of the kind comprising a closure member held on its seat by a spring, and an axially displaceable plunger for lifting the member off the seat for example to allow the fire extinguishing liquid or foam to pass through the valve to a nozzle or the like. Existing designs of such valves consist of a large number of parts, many of which are of critical dimensions, and consequently they are expensive to produce. The object of the invention is to provide a better and cheaper valve.
In accordance with the invention a fire extinguisher valve has a valve seat formed by the intersection of large and small coaxial passages, the large passage having a cage which retains and locates a ball and a helical compression spring which urges said ball onto said seat, said small passage locating an operating plunger for displacing the ball off the seat, and said small passage intersecting an outlet passage which allows flow via the cage and seat when the ball is so displaced.
Preferably the cage is made as a plastics moulding and is screw engaged with the body of the valve.
The invention is more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawing wherein Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a valve according to the invention taken on the line B-B of Figure 2; and Figure 2 is a part-sectional plan.
Referring to the drawings, the valve body has a through bore of which the upper part is a small diameter passage and the lower part is a large diameter passage.
The latter is screwthreaded. The shoulder between the vtwo portions of the passage is planar to provide a valve seat around the intersection. A ball can close the seat and is held in the closed position by an helical spring.
The ball is located in a cage which is externally screwthreaded to engage in the large passage, and has a fluted axially extending bore, so as to locate the ball for axial movement but provide passages permitting flow past the ball, particularly when it is off the seat. The cage has an internal shoulder to form an end abutment for the spring but leaving an axial port through the shoulder for flow, for example via an inlet pipe.
The cage communicates with a lateral port in the body for connection to a pressure gauge (at X).
The operating plunger is a slide fit in the smaller passage and is sealed by FLOUR ring. The plunger has a narrow stem extending past the radial outlet port which opens laterally from the small passage, and the stem is to contact the ball to displace it off its seat when moved for example by a hand lever pivoted on the body.
It will be seen that the valve has very few parts.
The cage may be made as a plastics moulding. The seat needs to be square and true, but otherwise the tolerances are all generous making the valve particularly economic to manufacture and assemble.

Claims (5)

1. A fire extinguisher valve having a valve seat formed by the intersection of large and small coaxial passages, the large passage housing a cage which retains and locates a ball and a helical compression spring which urges the ball onto the seat, said small passage locating an operating member for displacing the ball off the seat, and said small passage intersecting an outlet passage allowing flow via the cage and seat when the ball is so displaced.
2. A valve as claimed in claim 1 wherein the cage is screw engaged with a body of the valve.
3. A valve as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 wherein the cage is axially waisted and radially ported to communicate internal fluid pressures to a port in the body.
4. A valve as claimed in claim 1 wherein the said member has a larger diameter portion which is sealed in the small passage by an 1O" ring and a portion of small cross-sectional area extending between the outlet passage and the seat to allow fluid flow in the small passage.
5. A valve for a fire extinguisher substantially as described.
