Abstract
220,422. Crossley, C. E. July 2, 1923. Carbon-consuming cells; thermo-electric batteries.-Electric current is produced by disposing a metal plate 10 above the grate 4 of a furnace and ionizing the gases evolved from the burning fuel by means of suitable rays emitted from an apparatus 16 built into the walls of the furnace. The plate 10 and the grate 4 form the electrodes. The plate 10 may be made of electrolytic iron or of copper or nickel which may be gold plated. The grate may be supported on a metal ring 5 to which a lead 6 is connected. The ionizing rays may be cathode rays, X rays, ultra-violet rays, or rays from radio active material &c.
