Abstract

1,010,479. Photovoltaic devices. YARDNEY INTERNATIONAL CORPORATION. July 12, 1962 [July 12, 1961], No. 26860/62. Heading H1K. Electricity is generated by disposing two electrodes in a liquid electrolyte and using radio-active material to produce a higher radiation intensity at one electrode than at the other to produce a voltage between the electrodes. In one arrangement, water containing radioactive waste flows between parallel electrodes, one of which is shielded by means of lead. Both electrodes may be of carbon or one of carbon and the other of iron or nickel. In an alternative arrangement, one electrode is a perforated cylinder mounted in a stream and the other a rod downstream of it. Radio-active waste is tipped into the cylinder and carried away by the stream which also acts as electrolyte.
