Abstract
1,080,707. Ionization counters. GROUPEMENT ATOMIQUE ALSACIENNE ATLANTIQUE. Nov. 2, 1964 [Nov. 9, 1963], No. 44607/64. Heading H1D. [Also in Division G1] An arrangement for detecting radio-active radiation includes an ionization chamber comprising at least one collecting electrode 3, maintained at a constant voltage, and two high tension electrodes 1 and 2 supplied with A.C. potentials which are in opposite phase, the frequency of the alternating ionization current being twice the frequency of the A.C. in the high tension electrodes. The electrodes 1 and 2 may be part-cylinders as shown or may be complete cylinders disposed one outside and one inside electrode 3. Alternatively, the electrodes may be flat. To measure γ radiation flux the electrodes 1 and 2 are connected to a push-pull generator 10 having a frequency F. The collector electrode 3 is connected through an amplifier 14 tuned to a frequency 2F and a D.C. generator 12 to the centre point M of the generator 10. To measure neutron flux the chamber is filled with boron trifluoride or coatings 6, 7 and 8 of boron are provided. A second collecting electrode in the form of a cylinder surrounding electrodes 1 and 2 may be provided to form a γ-compensated neutron detector, measurement being effected by a differential amplifier.
