Abstract
1,133,908. Ionization counters. COMMISSARIAT A L'ENERGIE ATOMIQUE. 2 May, 1967 [6 May, 1966], No. 20332/67. Heading H1D. A particle detector tube whose sensitivity is low and remains constant for intense radiation, has a closed envelope 1 permeable to the radiation to be detected and filled with a gas, gas mixture, or vapour ionizable by the radiation, two electrodes A, C, provided inside the envelope and constituted by two metal rods aligned along the same axis, and an insulator sleeve 2 surrounding the facing ends of the electrodes, supported by the electrodes and having slight lateral clearance relative to the electrodes. In the described embodiment the sensitivity is constant at 17 pulses/sec. and per Roentgen hour at a radiation intensity of up to 100 Roentgens/hour and the relative sensitivity gradient is 15%, while the sensitivity may be as low as 1 pulse/sec. and per Roentgen/hour up to radiation intensities of over a thousand Roentgens per hour. The gas mixture may for instance be Ne-Ar with Br addition, sleeve 2 of glass, and the electrodes of 75% iron and 25% chromium.
