Abstract

1,183,718. Nucleonics. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 18 May, 1967 [18 May, 1966], No. 22203/66. Heading G6P. In a fission chamber neutron detector, the sensitivity is raised by employing the Ramsaver effect, by which the electron drift velocity in the gas filling of the chamber is raised by the addition of a second gas. The latter is a rare gas, is not subject to radiation damage and is capable of moderating the electron agitation energy so as to raise the drift velocity to the collector electrode. The gas mixture may be helium together with xenon, krypton or argon.
