Abstract

1,203,609. Detecting neutrons. INSTYTUT BADAN JADROWYCG. 22 Dec., 1967 [23 Dec., 1966], No. 58268/67. Heading G6P. [Also in Division G1] The dose equivalent (i.e. measured dose in rems, which is equivalent to the absorbed dose in rads multiplied by appropriate modifying factors) of a mixed field of gamma and neutron radiation is measured using a tissue equivalent ionization chamber 1 which contains an organic scintillator 2 coupled to a photomultiplier 3. The output current of the ionization chamber is linearly proportional to the absorbed dose rate and the scintillation counter current is dependent on the quality factor (the modifying factor by which the dose measurement is to be multiplied to obtain the dose equivalent). It can be arranged, by the use of resistors R 1 and R 2 and in accordance with the above-mentioned two relationships, that the current fed to an electrometer 4, being the difference between the ionization chamber current and.a fraction of the scintillation counter current, is a direct measurement of the dose equivalent rate from which the dose equivalent itself is calculated.
