Abstract

812,591. Radio-active measuring. FOXBORO CO. Jan. 3, 1957 [Jan. 26, 1956], No. 344/57. Class 40 (3). A measuring system consists of radio-active source means emitting hard and soft radiation into two ionization chambers, the outputs from which are combined, the cham. bers being mounted together on one rigid support and the source means on another. Beta rays from a thallium 204 source 16 pass through an air gap 18 and the material under test 19 into an ionization chamber 12 which is faced by a stainless steel window 20. Chamber 12 is electrically polarized by electrodes 21 and 22, the current flowing through the chamber varying as a factor of the radiation. A second source 25 consists of hard radiation strontium 90. The outputs from the two chambers are combined differentially, amplified at 23 and displayed at 24. The two sources are fixed to a rigid support 32 which is adjustable by screws 35 and are provided with individual adjustment by screws 39. Pins 36 prevent rotation. The chambers are similarly adjustable. Alternatively only one source of radiation, caesium 137 which emits both gamma and beta rays, and two ionization chambers responding respectively to the beta and gamma rays may be used. The gamma-ray chamber may be pressurized.
