An ionization chamber comprises two high-tension electrodes 20 and 30 with an interposed measuring electrode 10 and grid 40. The zone formed by electrodes 10 and 20 has wall coatings such that ions are produced by only one kind of radiation, e.g. gamma rays. The zone formed by electrodes 10 and 30 has wall coatings such that ions are produced by two kinds of radiation, e.g. gamma rays and neutrons. Both zones are filled with a suitable gas. If the chamber is placed in a mixed radiation field, the potention applied to the grid 40 can be so adjusted that the ionization current due to gamma rays in the inner zone 10, 30 is balanced by that due to gamma rays in the outer zone 10, 20 so that only the ionization due to neutrons is measured. Different voltages may be connected to individual wires of the grid 40 so that different parts of the outer zone 10, 20 are excited to a different degree. In the arrangement shown the electrodes are concentric hollow spheres. The apparatus may be used in measurements involving variation in the pressure of the gas filling of the chamber when subjected to constant radiation. The grid 40 then enables the ionization current to be adjusted to desired value.
