Abstract

806,306. Neutron detectors. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. April 29, 1955 [April 30, 1954], No. 12515/55. Class 40 (3). [Also in Group XL (a)] A neutron detector comprises two annular axially aligned chambers containing a scintillating phosphor between which is situated a target of samarium oxide which responds to neutron capture by emitting radiations detected by the scintillating phosphors. As shown, the phosphor 15, which is preferably toluene terphenyl, is contained in annular housings 13, 14 which are of aluminium. The housings are axially aligned and supported by mounting legs 16 while between the housings is a holder 18 containing a disc-shaped target 17 of samarium oxide. The ends of photo-multipliers 19 enter the phosphor housings and are sealed by rubber gaskets 22. The output of the two sets of multipliers associated with the two chambers of phosphor are separately amplified and fed to a coincidence circuit so that random pulses produced by neutrons scattered by the target affect one detector only while gamma rays produced by neutron capture in the target produce simultaneous light flashes in both phosphors and pass through the coincident circuit to operate a counting circuit.
