Abstract

828,917. Heavy-ion-beam tubes. SCHLUMBERGER WELL SURVEYING CORPORATION. April 19, 1956, No. 12020/56. Class 39(1). [Also in Group XL(b)] A source of neutrons for well-logging apparatus (see Group XL(b)) comprises a conventional source of accelerated deuteriumoins and a target of either tritium or deuterium to give neutrons of 14 mev and 2À5-3À0 mev energy levels respectively. In order to be able to obtain neutrons of either energy level at will from the same source targets 70 and 71 of tritium and deuterium may be mounted in the same generator and deflection plates 72 provided to enable the ion beam to be directed to the required source. The beam may be automatically controlled to alternate between the targets. A similar effect to that resulting from alternating the beam can be achieved by using a rotating target on the face of which is deposited semicircular sections of deuterium and tritium.
