Abstract
219,441. Saitoh, T. May 22, 1923. Couplings, automatic.-In a coupling comprising a fixed jaw and a pivotally movable jaw which is opened automatically by the entrance between the two jaws of the enlarged end of a draught member on the opposing vehicle, means are provided for retaining the movable jaw in the closed position. The coupling head A comprises a fixed jaw 1 secured by bolts 5. 7 to side plates 2<1> and a movable jaw 8 pivoted at 9 to the same side plates which are fixed to a bracket 3 on the vehicle by the bolt 5. The draught member 19 has an enlarged end 21, which, when the vehicles come together, tilts the movable jaw, as in Fig. 4, and enters the coupling head A. The movable jaw then falls and engages behind the enlarged head 21. A crank 12 is then revolved by hand to the position shown in dot-and-dash line in Fig. 3 to lock the movable jaw 8, the crank being retained in this position by a leaf spring 11 fixed to the jaw 8.
