218,948. Matthews, I. Feb. 19, 1924. Sleepers, securing rails to; tie-bars.-Rails 5 are secured to sleepers 1 by clamps 6, 7 inserted into slots in the sleeper from above and secured by a bar 2 inserted laterally into the sleeper, the rails being engaged by a wedge 15 and distancepiece 14. The clamps are slotted and the bar is notched, while packings 8, 9, when placed inside. the clamps, enable the clamps to receive rails with a wider flange. The piece 14 may be serrated to engage serrations on the clamp 7 or a member carried by it to enable the gauge to be adjusted. The bar 2 may be a tie-bar. The sleeper may be of wood, metal, concrete, or reinforced-concrete, and the bar 2 may slide in a metallic liner in the sleeper.
