Abstract

Variable-speed gearing. - In a board for indicating the positions and movements of a number of trains, the lines are represented by cords and the speeds of the cords are made proportional to the speeds of the appropriate trains by providing pulleys which are of different sizes and have adjustable diameters. Each pulley comprises a disc M, Fig. 5, fixed on the shaft H<6> and an adjustable disc N, these discs being formed with interlacing teeth M<1>, N<1>, and kept apart by springs M<3>. In the case of the larger pulleys, the discs are held together by nuts M<5> having wide flanges M<6> which project beyond the edges of the pulleys and are provided with graduation marks at their peripheries. In the smaller pulleys, a single nut M<5> is employed and is threaded on to the hub M<2>. The cords are kept taut by jockey pulleys such as J<1>, J<2>, Fig. 7, which are mounted in frames J<3>, J<4>, on axles J<5> the ends of which slide in slotted guides J<6>. The frames J<3>, J<4> are attached to tensioning cords J<7>, J<8>, which terminate in weights after passing over further pulleys.
