Abstract
480,538. Utilizing movements of vehicles. STONE & CO., Ltd., J., and CHILTON, A. H. Aug. 22, 1936, No. 23150. [Class 103 (iii)] [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXXV] A driving arrangement for axle-driven auxiliary apparatus, e.g. a generator or refrigerator compressor, disposed under vehicles, comprises gearing supported together with the driven apparatus by common supporting means and directly connecting the longitudinallyextending shaft 15 of the driven apparatus to a transversely extending shaft 13, and endless flexible transmission means connecting the shaft 13 to a vehicle axle 4. As shown a generator 1 is swingingly supported by links 5 centrally from the headstock 3 of the bogie framework 2, with its shaft 15 extending through a gearbox 12 connected to and supported by the generator casing. The shaft 15 is connected by bevel gears 14, Fig. 5, to the shaft 13 each end or one end of which carries a belt-pulley 16 having one or more pulley-grooves 17 therein. Two belts 18 are shown connecting each pulley 16 to a corresponding pulley 19 on the axle 4. Adjustable tensioning means for the belts are provided comprising springs 20 adapted to abut flanges 23 on guide rods 21 and a fixed bracket 22 through which one end of each rod is slidable, the other end being adjustably screwthreaded in a transverse member 24 pivotally mounted on lugs 25 on the generator casing. Alternatively, the belt-tensioning means may comprise springs arranged in telescopic guides extending diagonally across the suspension linkage. According to modifications (a) the generator gearing unit may be disposed between the axles of the bogie ; (b) the unit may be suspended from the underframe of a vehicle ; (c) the bevel gears may be replaced by wormgearing ; (d) one or more chains may replace or be provided in addition to the belts 18, and in the latter case combined pulleys and sprocket wheels may be arranged on the shaft 13 and axle so that either drive may be employed.
