Vehicle-window opening and closing apparatus. -In a window opened and closed by a lever E operated by a handle and chain or other gearing, a counterbalancing device is provided consisting of two articulated links having one or more controlling springs G, one link being connected by a link F to an extension of the operating lever E. The window is moved over the fence rail against the action of springs engaging the channel guides by means of a cam K on the lower rail adapted to engage a cam K<1> on the sector 2<1> or on the plate T. A holding-device is combined wtih the handle consisting of a spring-pressed sleeve f slidably keyed to the shaft e and provided with notches engaging a fixed recessed plate g. The sleeve is disengaged from the plate by cam-shaped surfaces or the handle and sleeve during an initial idle movement of the handle. In a modification, the holding-device consists of a pivoted lever housed in a mortice in the shaft e and spring-pressed into a fixed recessed plate so as to hold the shaft. The lever is disengaged by the engagement of its camshaped end with the handle during an idle movement. In a further modification, the holding device may consist of a spring-pressed releasable catch engaging a serrated are on the frame.
