Abstract
217,056. Jackson, W. J. Mellersh-, (Submarine Signal Corporation). June 21, 1923. Diaphragm and plate vibrators.-In a soundproducer, particularly for subaqueous signalling, the sound-emitting member consists of a rigid mass of steel A which is mounted so as to vibrate as a whole without deformation by means of a relatively-thin elastic annulus a<1>, and is set into vibration by means of an electrodynamicallyoscillated copper cylinder L to which it is connected through coaxial elastic tubes G, G<1>. The cylinder L is located in the narrow air-gap between the mass A, which is magnetized by a direct-current winding B, and a surrounding magnetic collar M. The passage of alternating- current through other windings E, F sets the cylinder L into longitudinal oscillation, its movement being communicated, with a reduction in amplitude, through the elastic tubes G<1>, G to the mass A which vibrates in a piston-like manner to transmit sound waves to the surrounding medium.
