Abstract

216,099. Snead & Co., (Assignees of Macdonald, A. S., Huggins, E. M., and Waite, C. C.). May 16, 1923, [Convention date]. Alarms operated by expansion of solids. - An electric apparatus for heating metal bars P and the like comprises longitudinally adjustable clamps 10, 11 carried by horizontal supports 12 and means actuated by the expansion of the bar for indicating its temperature, the clamp 11 being mounted on a carriage 25 which moves automatically to take up the expansion of the bar. The carriage 25 is provided with vertical and horizontal rollers 27, 28, engaging fixed guideways 26. A cord 32 secured to a lug 31 on the carriage passes over a drum 33 mounted thereon to a counterweight 30 which keeps the bar in tension. The carriage can be returned to its original position by a treadle 36, a spring bolt 75 engaging a fixed bush 76 when the original position is reached. The clamps 10, 11 are provided with jaws 40, 41, the lower jaws 41 being operated to grip the bar by solenoids 54 acting against springs 57. The cores of the solenoids are in two parts 59, 61, the part 61 being secured to the jaws. The supply leads 45 are connected to the bodies of the clamps, the latter being connected to the lower jaws by laminated flexible conductors 52. The heating current is supplied by a transformer T, Fig. 7. Rotation of a handoperated cam 80 raises the bolt 75 and closes the switch 79 with consequent closure of a switch X to complete the circuit through the solenoids 54 from the mains D. Further rotation of the cam closes the switch 78 to complete the primary circuit of the transformer T. Movement of the carriage 25 to take up the expansion of the bar P causes rotation through rack and pinion gearing of a member 70 moving over a graduated dial and carrying a contact 72. When the expansion has reached a predetermined amount, the contact 72 engages the contact 73 with consequent closure of a switch B to open the primary circuit of the transformer and close a circuit containing an .alarm bell N and a lamp, N<1>. A relay switch Y, operated by a switch 63 connected to one of the jaws 41, is closed only when the jaws are open so as to ensure a high initial current through the solenoids, and is arranged in shunt to a resist. ance Z which is sufficiently large to prevent overheating of the solenoids when the jaws are closed.
