Abstract

143,511. Macdonald, A. S., and Huggins, E. M. May 10, 1919, [Convention date]. Thermometers and pyrometers.-In apparatus for indicating the temperature of metal articles undergoing heat treatment, the articles are supported between clamps 12, 13 slidably mounted on the framework 7 which serve as terminals for the supply of electric current for heating. The lower clamp 13 is brought into position by the treadle mechanism E; the upper clamp 12 which is suspended from a rope 16 passing over a pulley 17 and a drum 18 is brought into a position to accommodate the length of the strip 11 by turning the hand-wheel 19 which rotates the drum 18 through the worm and wheel 20. As the shaft 18<1> upon which the drum 18 is mounted revolves, it turns, by means of the gearing 25, a dial F which has a linear scale G on its periphery and radial lines H corresponding to the length of the article under treatment, and also a temperature scale I. Thus a suitable temperature scale to correspond with the length of the article is brought into posifion each time. The current is then switched on and as the strip 11 expands on increase in temperature the lower contact 13 moves downwards and operates a pointer 26 through the rack 27 and segment 28 which indicates the changing temperature. When the desired temperature is obtained, the strip may be lowered into the oil tank 10. In a modification, shown in Fig. 7, the pointer 26 is pivoted at 48 on a fixed bracket 47 and is adapted to move over a dial F. When the drum 18 is revolved to suit the length of the strip 11, a block 50 is caused to move relatively to the pivot 48 along the slot 49 in the pointer by means of the screwed shaft 45 and the two pairs of gears 43, 44, and 41, 42. The bracket 46 is free to move up or down on the framework 7 with the lower clamp 13 thus causing the pointer to move over the scale F with variations in the temperature of the article or strip 11. The temperature is correct for any length of strip as the distance from 50<1> to pivot 48 is always proportional to the length of the strip 11. The mechanism may be made self-recording by providing a pencil 56 on the pointer.
