Abstract
216,089. MacArthur, W. J., and Maynard, R. E. May 16, 1923, [Convention date]. Strainers comprising grids or gratings.-Apparatus for separating oil from water, such as the bilge or ballast water of ships, comprises a chamber with capillary openings in the walls through which the water passes, while the oil rises to an outlet. A chamber formed of a series of flat rings 32 separated by washers 33 and held together by bolts 30 is shown. A mixture of oil and water delivered to a settling tank 11 passes down a pipe 40 to the interior of the rings in the separator 12. The water passes outward between the rings to an outlet 48 while the oil is retained and displaced upward to the tank 11 through a pipe 45. The tank 11 is provided with an outlet pipe 60 for the oil, and the vessel 12 with a connection 50 through which water or steam under pressure can be admitted for flushing out the apparatus.
