Abstract
225,639. MacLean, J. B., and Aiton, J. A. Sept. 18, 1923. Purifying liquids.- In an apparatus for removing gases from liquids, particularly from boiler feed-water, comprising means for heating the liquid while subjecting it to reduced pressure and means for removing residual gases from the liquid so treated by absorption or chemical action, the means for effecting the first treatment are arranged above a vessel or chamber containing the reagent required for the second treatment. In the construction of apparatus shown in the Figure, liquid entering the casing 1 through the perforated pipe 11 is heated by steam admitted through the conduit 6 into the distributor 3, which is provided with perforations 4 and deflectors 5; the conduit 12 communicates with an exhauster. The liquid passes to a chamber 13 containing material 14, such as sheets of expanded steel having a high manganese content, adapted to remove residual gases, particularly oxygen. From the chamber 13 the liquid passes by way of a chamber 16, containing coke, and a strainer 20 to the outlet 21. The supply of liquid is regulated by a float 23 which, by means of a link 28, operates a valve 29 on the supply pipe. Alternatively the float may be arranged to control the admission of steam to the pump which delivers the liquid to the distributor 11.
