Abstract

215,678. Woosnam, A., (Herkules Akt.- Ges. f³r Fabrikation and Handel). Dec. 6, 1923. No Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Mercury cut-outs. -A liquid - thread mercury or other conducting liquid interrupter comprises a refractory body 9 containing a mercury thread 14 between mercury reservoirs 12, 13 closed at one end by a metal flange 22, with intermediate packing, and at the other end by a rubber diaphragm. The body fits within a tubular casing 1 and has the exterior form of a cartridge fuse. The casing is closed at one end by a metal cover with an external projection 3 to fit within the fuse, socket, an internal projection 4 resting against the diaphragm and carry contacts 5 engaged by contacts 19. The contacts 19 consist of projections from a ring 16 secured to the body 9 and electrically connected to the reservoir 13 by a pin 18. A non-conducting spindle 23 is secured to the plate 22 and carries a sleeve 24 provided with a flange 25. The flange is pressed against the fixed endring 6 by a light spring 26 which holds the parts in the position shown and electrically connects the reservoir 14 with the flange 25 in engagement with the ring 6. With excess current, the thread divides and the vaporised mercury presses the diaphragm againt the projection, whereupon the body 9 moves to the right, breaking the circuit at the contacts 5, 19. The off position of the fuse may be observed by the appearance of the spindle 23 through the orifice 27. To reset the fuse, the sleeve 24 is pressed in thereby separating the contacts 6, 25 in the fuse circuit; thereafter the further compression of the spring 26 forces the body 9 into the, contact position shown in Fig. 1 and, upon release of the sleeve the circuit is completed at the contacts 6, 25.
