Abstract

489,182. Electric - battery lamps. EVER READY CO. (GREAT BRITAIN). Ltd., and TERRY. M. C. Jan. 28, 1937, No. 2550. [Class 39 (ii)] An electric-battery lamp is provided with a gas-tight contact chamber 5 formed within a block 4 of insulating material and housing two contact members 8, 11 which are normally held apart by a compressed spring 10, so that the upper end of the contact 8 is maintained in permanent abutment with the centre contact 19 of the lamp bulb, whereby upon relative movement between the bulb-carrying head and the chamber 5 the contact 8 is pressed against the contact 11 to complete the battery circuit, the contact 11 being normally in electrical connection with the battery 20. The contact 11 is mounted on a helical spring 13 located within a metal cup 12 which is secured to an insulating disc 6 forming the bottom of the chamber 5, and the centre contact of the battery 20 is held against the cup 12 by a helical spring between the bottom of the battery and the casing. Alternatively a flexible lead may connect the cup 12 to one pole of the battery, a return lead being provided between the bulb-carrying head and the other pole of the battery, thus enabling the battery to be carried as a separate unit in the pocket. The insulating block 4 is screwed into the upper end of the battery casing 1 which is screw-threaded externally so that the head 3 can be screwed downwardly thereon to switch on the light. A gas-tight and watertight connection is provided by a packing- ring 29 within a recess in the periphery of the casing located beneath a smooth unthreaded portion at the lower end of the cap 3. A sealed connection is also provided at the joint between the reflector 16 and cover glass 18 by packing-material 32 which is pressed against a flange 31 by means of a screwthreaded disc 30 located against the underside of the reflector. The bottom of the casing may be sealed either by soldering thereon the end cover 27 or, if screw-threaded, by a packing- ring 28. The plunger 8 fits closely within an aperture 7 into the chamber 5, so that an approximately gas-tight fit is provided. The chamber 5 and interior of the torch may be filled with an inert gas, or the chamber may be packed with an acid-free grease. The bulb holder 17 is a push fit within a neck 16a on the lower end of the reflector. In a modification the insulating block 4 is held in position by a bayonet-joint connection, and a similar connection is provided between the cap 3 and the torch casing.
