Guards, controlling.- In vertical or horizontal presses, stamps, hammers &c., a pivoted guard is carried by a lever or lever system pivoted on a stationary part and receiving motion from a moving part, and is connected to the machine by constraining - means causing it to move at right angles to the front of the machine in a curvilinear path. A carrier lever b, which may comprise a pair of levers rigidly connected by a 'cross shaft d, is pivoted on a bracket c. The lever b, or a separate lever e, is connected by a link f and adjustable means g to the tool-carrying ram a, and the lower end pivotally carries a cross shaft i coupling a pair of arms h, between the ends of which extends a spring, padded bar, or other hand-striking piece j. The extension k of one of the arms, or a separate arm on the shaft i, is adjustably connected to the frame by a link l, which is preferably bent or cranked to avoid pinching the operator's fingers between the members k, l. The spaces between the pairs of arms b, h may be closed by bars o or wire meshes. Chiefly during the initial descent of the ram a, the part j is swung over the bed m into the position shown in Fig. 3 and, in broken lines, in Fig. 1. In place of the link constraint l, the end of the arm k may traverse a fixed slot, or a pinion on the shaft i may engage a fixed rack.
