My invention relates to improvements in guards for presses and the like, and more particularly to the type of guard arranged to move on horizontal guides in front of the tool in advance of 5 the tool movement at each operation and operated to push out of the path of the tool the operators hands or arms. In the past such guards have only been made to move transversely across the front of the press opening and it has been found that it is still possible for an operator to insert his arm over the top or sides of such guards and for accidents to occur. Accidents have also been known to occur with such guards through the guard striking an operators arm on the inner side of the elbow 'and'causing the operators forearm to be jerked under a descending die of a press. The object of the present invention is to provide a guard which will prevent such occurrences as above mentioned and generally be 20 more effective.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the construction shown comprises a bracket I secured by means of screws 2 to the press or other machine, a horizontal guide 3 mounted on the brack- 35 et l and extending across the front of the press 4, a sleeve 5 slidably mounted on the guide 3, caused to move transversely across the front of the press at each stroke of the press by means of an actuating link 6 pivotally secured to the sleeve, 2.
40 bracket 1 extending upwardly from said sleeve and mounted thereon, a vertical guard member 8 here shown as a spring extending between the upper end of the bracket and the sleeve, upper and lower arms 9 and I0, respectively, extending rear- 45 wardly from said bracket, a second guard member H swingably mounted on the rearwardly extending arms 9 and ill, a channel guide I2 having a straight portion extending across the front of the press and having a curved side portion l3 extend- 50 ing rearwardly and along the side of the press forming a guide for the swinging end of the swinging guard member II, and a supporting slide I4 for the bracket 1 secured to the upper rearwardly-extending arm 9.
55 The guard member I l comprises a substantially rectangular frame having two upright members l and I6 and two horizontal members I! and I8 connecting the upright members l5 and It, as shown in Fig. 4. The upright member l5 con-- stitutes the swingable edge of the guard member 5 and the upright member I6 constitutes the pivotal edge of the guard member ll. The member I6 is pivotally mounted in the. arms 9 and I0. iThe upper end of the upright I5 is guided in the channel guide I [so that the swingable edge of the 10 guard member travels in a rectangular path across in front of the tool in the first part of its movement and swings to the rear about the axisof the upright I6 in the latter part of its'movement;
In operation, should the machine operator fail to withdraw his hands or arms from under the press tool when the tool approaches the end of its travel, the front transverse moving guard 8 will push them to one side and if for any reason the operator, by reason of abnormal reach or by reaching over the guardat an acute angle, can still leave his hands or arms in danger the inner guard ll during the course of its circumferential movement round the tool will push them out of the danger line. 5
The swinging guard member II is guided in its movement by the engagement of the forward part of the guard l l in the channel guide l2, the guard moving from the full-line positions shown in Figs. 1 and 2 to the dotted-line positions. As 50 shown in Fig. 2, during the latter part of the movement of the guard l I, the slide l4 disengages the side of the channel guide l2 to enable the guard member H to complete its swinging rearward movement.
The aforesaid moving guard members may be used in conjunction with any desired arrangement of fixed guard members disposed on each side of the tool. If desired, I may omit the front transverse moving guard and rely merely on the combined transverse and circumferential moving member only.
Further modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is desired, therefore, that the invention be limited only by the prior art and the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A safety device for presses and the like comprising movable guard means and movement controlling means controlled in synchronism with the press operation for causing said guard means to move across in front of the tool in the first part of its movement and from front to rear at the side of the tool in the latter part of its movement.

said 'movement-controlling means comprising guide means for the swingable edge of said guard having a rectilinear portion extending across in front of the tool and a curvilinear portion extending rearwardly from said rectilinear portion.
3. A safety device for pressesand the like comprising a rectilinear guide exten ding transversely with respect to the press, a slide mounted on said V guide, a guard pivotally mounted on said slide to swing about a substantially vertical axisfand means for causing the swingable edge of said 1 a guard to travel in a substantially rectilinear path 20 across in front of the tool in the first part of its movement and to swing to the rear about its axis inthe latter part of, its movement.
'4. A safety device for presses and the like comprising a rectilinear guide extending transversely with respectto the press, a slide mounted on said guide, a guard pivotally mounted onsaid slide to swing about: a substantially vertical axis, and
