SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR PRESSING-MACHINES.

- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHARLES L. BRALEY and SYDNEY PREs'rwIoH, citizens of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Safety Attachments for Pressing- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to pressing machines such as are used for pressing cloth, garments, flat work or other articles or materials. The object of the invention is to provide a safety attachment for. such presses which operates conjointly with the movable press head and is projected'in advance of said head into or near the entrance to the pressing space between the press heads before the upper press comes down, for the purpose of both obstructing the entrance and preventing the operator from inserting his hands there n and also striking his hand if already there and warning him to remove it, and which device is withdrawn from effective position when the press head is fully depressed and is held out of the way until it is again operated. Further objects of the invention are in part obvious and in part will appear more in detail hereinafter.
In the drawings, which represent one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the upper portion of a press with the invention applied thereto,the press head being show-n in elevated position; F ig. 2 is a similar view with the press head part y depressed; Fig.-3 is a detail sectional elevation on the line 3-3, Fig. 5; Fig.4 is a view corresponding to Fig. 1, with the press head fully depressed; and Fig. 5 is a plan view.
The press itself may be of any suitable form or design, and in the drawings, for purposes of illustration, is shown as of the form illustrated in a prior application of Charles L. Braley for pressing machine, filed Aug. 14, 1916, Serial 'No- 114794. It comprises a suitable frame 1 supporting a relatively stationary, pressing member 2 with which cooperates a movable pressing member 3 carried by the usual swinging arm 4 hinged at 5 to the frame. The swrngingarm may be operated in any suitable manner, for example, by the treadle and springmechanism- Specification of Letters Patent.

Located just above "the axis of turnin movement of the arm 4, indicated at 6, Fig. 1, are two brackets 7 carried by the frame and provided with ears 8 to receive stud shafts 9 attached to the guard carrying members 10. Said members are each provided with a forwardly extending arm 11 to receive a bail wire or rod 12, which wires extend toward the front of the machine above the upper pressing member 3 and terminate outside the brackets 13 supportingthe handle 14, where they are connected to sleeve sup ports 15 for the guard wire 16. Said guard wire extends across the front of the machine, substantially from end to end thereof and always lies below the handle 14, due to the looping of the guard and bail wires around said handle.
Each member 10 also is provided with an upwardly extending arm 17 having a bore 1n which is a sliding latch 18 pressed yieldingly outwardly by a sprin 19 and having a beveled advance face 20. ttached to each member 10 is a tension spring 21 connected to a fixed support 22 and always tending to elevate the guard wire.
A-djacent each member 10 is an upwardly extending arm 23 attached to and moving with the hinged arm 4. Each of said arms 23 has a lateral flange 24 extending over the latch device 18, said flange having an inclined or beveled shoulder 25 on its lower face, and a straight front face 26.
In the elevated position of the press head, shown in Fig. 1, the straight faces 26 of the arms 23 are behind the latches 18,'since the of the members 10 is limited, by on agement of the guard wire with the han le 14. As the upper press head moves down to the position shown in Fig. 2, where the press is partly closed, the arms 23 push the members 10 forwardly, and as the pivotal axis of said members is above the axis 6 the guard wire is depressed in advance of the descending press head. If the operators hand is in the space between the press heads, the blow on his hand or pressing space just before the press is fully closed, so that the careless operator is not likely to insert his hand at a dangerous time.
When the press head reaches the position shown in Fig. 2 the flanges 24 of the arms 23 pass thelatches 18 so that the springs 21 take efi'ect and elevate the guard wire. In the final closed position of the press, shown in Fig. 4, the guard wire is just below the handle 14 and said guard wire moves back with the press head in this position. Durin the retracting movement of the press head the beveled shoulders 25 of the arms 23 wipe over, depress and pass the latches 18 until the parts finally reach the position shown in Fig. 1, ready for another operation.
The device is simple, may be easily adapted and attached to any form of press, and serves as an efiicient guard to operatorshands from injury.
What we claim is 1. A pressing machine, comprising a stationary pressing member, a cooperating movable pressing membermounted to swing about an axis, a guard mounted to swing about a different axis, an actuating member position.
