Abstract
214,610. Pratt, W. C. April 20, 1923, [Convention date]. Door chains and the like; latches, sliding.-A door or window fastener which allows partial opening of the door or window comprises a spring-pressed latch bolt 13, with grooves 22, 23 in its nose, mounted in a casing 18 on the door &c., and a slotted bracket 10 with inturned end 14 secured by a screw 17 in a staple 15 on the door-jamb &c. The slot 11 has an enlarged end 12 to receive the nose end of the bolt in the shut position. When partly withdrawn, the grooves in the latch register with the sides of the slot, and the door may be moved to the dotted line position but no further, and in this position it may be held by a catch 24. A catch 25 pivoted to the bracket at 26 may be turned to engage the groove 22 to hold the latch 13 against withdrawal and this catch will be reset automatically each time the latch moves to the dotted position, or by gravity. A pivoted catch 20 or a catch swing- ing down over the nose end of the bolt may be used to hold the latch withdrawn. The bracket 10 fits through a, slot in the back plate 28 of the latch casing. When used for fastening doors the bracket 10 is curved, but for sliding windows is straight. The case 18 is secured by a screw through its back plate, a hole 35 being made in the case for access thereto when the bolt is removed.
