Fire-bars and grates.-In an inclined step grate in order to ensure an even thickness of fuel bed, the grate is divided into sections of inclination progressively less towards the rear, or the rate of actuation or the length of stroke of the bars may be varied to give the same result. In the construction illustrated the inclination of the front section a is greater than that of the, middle section b which in turn is greater than that of the rear section c. In the modification in which the strokes of the bars in the different sections vary, this may be effected by interposing a different amount of lost motion, e.g. a pin and slot, in the actuating means for the different sections.
