Abstract

176,727. Seyboth & Co., and Seyboth, F. July 23, 1921. Grates.-A stepped grate having movable elements arranged between fixed elements is provided with a number of successively-arranged movable grate bars which are composed in groups, the length as well as the number of strokes of one group being independent of the length and number of strokes of the adjacent groups. Figs. 1 and 2 show one arrangement, the grate being divided into three sections. Fixed bars a are supported by bearers c which rest on cross-bearers e1, e2 extending across the grate and supported by the side-frames C1' C2. The movable bars b pass between the fixed bars a and are supported on the carriage D2 in such a manner that displacement is impossible. Figs. 4 and 5 show the method of attachment of the bars b to projections f on the carriage D2, the rib x engaging the slot in the lug g of the bar. A gear-box is arranged to move the carriages supporting the movable bars to and fro. The shaft i, driven by a belt-pulley L, drives the ratchet O1 by means of an eccentric M and a pawl K1. The ratchet O1 in turn rotates the crank-arm T1 through toothed gears P1, P2, and an oscillating motion is imparted to the shaft M1 through a rod S1 and a lever y1. Levers N1 on the shaft M1 and a rod k2 attached to the pin h on the carriage D2 cause the carriage to reciprocate. The length of stroke is varied by making the pins of the cranks T1, y1. or N1 adjustable. The number of strokes is varied by means of a shield o1 adjusted by the hand-lever P, above the ratchet 0,. Each carriage D is operated in a similar manner, as also are the feeding-rollers. In one modification, the bars a, instead of being fixed, are mounted on carriages in a similar manner to the bars b, but are driven in the opposite direction. In another modification, the grate-bars of one or more sections of the grate extend lengthways instead of crossways upon the carriages; or the bars may be of serrated formation so that they intersect each other and prevent layers of clinker from being formed. A scraper-bar may be fitted between the upper surface of the moving bar and the lower surface of the fixed bar.
