Mechanical stoking; grates.-In an underfeed stoker of the kind comprising a number of inclined retorts fed with fuel by reciprocating rams and having fixed or movable side walls and tuyeres and extension grates at the rear, means are provided for agitating or breaking up the fuel during its passage through 'the retorts and for admitting supplementary air to the central portions of the fuel in the retorts. Fig. 1 shows an underfeed stoker provided with retorts A having movable side walls F and tuyeres F<1> and with reciprocating extension grates H at the rear. Supplementary air admission means are located in the retorts consisting of stepped grates of box-like form having air emission openings in the risers and perforated coneshape tuyeres I attached to the 'treads, air being admitted to the tuyeres from a chamber B beneath the retorts. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which the supplementary tuyeres I are mounted on the bottom of the retorts, which are also provided with a combined plough and fuel spreader J and with one or more agitating devices K attached to one of the side walls of the retort. The devices K may also admit air to the fuel. The tuyeres I may be omitted and the agitating devices and plough may be used alone or one of more tuyeres I may be used in lieu of the plough. Fig. 9 shows an underfeed stoker having fixed side walls F<2> and tuyeres F<3>, the fuel being advanced through the retort by a variable stroke pusher G provided with supplementary air admission tuyeres I<1>.
