[Class 51 (i).l In an underfeed stoker of the kind in which the fuel is fed into troughs having tuyere plates at the sides, the superposed stepped tuyere plates a,re moved relatively to another so that either one plate is stationary and the adjacent plate is reciprocated or both plates are given reciprocating movements differing in phase. The stepped plates of the extension grate are also moved relatively to one another. As shown in Fig. 2, the tuyere plates i are mounted on a frame l which is operated from the feeding ram through the lever q and rod s, while the tuyere plates k are fixed. The extension grate is provided with fixed plates n and movable plates m mounted on a frame operated by a rod t attached to the lever q. The tuyere plates may extend transversely from one retort to the next and be operated by one ram, or they may be divided longitudinally and operated by separate rams.
