Abstract

357,546. Mechanical stokers. DADY, A. 0., 11, South County Street, Waukegan, Illinois, U.S.A. June 23, 1930, No. 19071. [Class 51 (i).] In an underfeed mechanical stoker comprising a ram c operating at the base of a hopper a and connected to pusher elements 20 which serve to feed the fuel through a diverging tunnel 17 to the retort p, the floor of the tunnel 17 slopes downwardlv from the ram chamber b and is formed with a longitudinal groove 17a, the horizontal bottom of which lies in a plane below the ram chamber so that, on the backward stroke of the ram, the first pusher element 20 is entirely withdrawn into the groove. The pushers 20, which are mounted on a rod 15 secured to a bracket 13 depending from the ram c, are wedge-shaped with the rearwardly sloping faces 20a concave as shown in Fig. 7. The ram and pusher are actuated as a single unit by a piston e connected to the ram by a rod g and operating within a pressure-fluid cylinder h the inlet and outlet ports of which are controlled by a slide valve 11. The latter is carried by an operating stem 12 on which are mounted collars 12a, 12b adapted for alternate engagement by a tappet 13a on the ram to effect reversal. To prevent choking of the inlet 18 to the tunnel 17, this opening is formed around its periphery with radial teeth or projections 25 against which large pieces of fuel will be crushed by the forward movement of the ram.
