Abstract

265,191. Martin, J. Jan. 29, 1926, [Convention date]. Grates.-Combustion of fuel is effected on an inclined grate having an ash-discharge outlet at the upper and a clinker discharge outlet at the lower end, the lower layers of fuel being moved forwardly and the upper layers rearwardly by the reciprocating grate members. As shown in Fig. 2, the grate is formed of forwardly and upwardly inclined reciprocating members, the adjacent members being moved by gearing g in opposite directions. Fine ash is discharged through an opening e controlled by a slide m and the clinkers pass over reciprocating grate bars o to a discharge passage d. By adjusting the opening e and the operation of the bars o the fuel and ashes resting on the grate may be caused to partake of a more or less circuitous course. The shaft p for reciprocating the bars o is driven by a rod t operated from an eccentric s connected with the fuel feeding mechanism. The end of the rod t is connected to a crank v, Fig. 3, on the shaft p through a rod w carrying a nut x to vary the amount of lost motion between the rod t and crank v and the reciprocation of the bars o.
