Abstract

1374430 Smoking apparatus AFOS Ltd 11 Jan 1972 [12 Jan 1971] 1353/71 Heading A2D [Also in Division A5] A smoke producer comprises a smoke box having a smoke outlet at its upper regions, a grate within the smoke box, a rake mechanism capable of being reciprocated to rake fuel on said grate and a fuel-dispensing means for delivering fuel to the grate at a desired rate. A suitable smoke producer is shown in Fig. 1, and comprises a smoke box 12, outlet 14, a perforated grate 13 and rake 18. In operation, fuel (saw-dust or peat) in hopper 15 is fed by rotary valve 16 to a plate 17. The reciprocating rake 18 passes this fuel on to the grate, and ash from the burnt fuel falls off the cold end of the grate into ash box 19. The rake is reciprocated by motor 20 acting through gearbox 21, endless band 33, eccentric 31 and link 29. The fuel in the hopper 15 may be dampened by water flowing from duct 25. There is also provided a cooler 26 to eliminate 'flaring' and enhance the quality of the smoke produced. In another embodiment of the producer (Fig. 2, not shown), the rake includes cam members, engageable with cam tracks on or adjacent the grate, which allow the rake to adopt a low position relative to the grate in a forward fuel-advancing stroke of the rake and which lift the rake to a high position relative to the grate for the return stroke. The grate may be vibrated and further may be of a perforated construction positioned above a static grate.
