Sweeping-machines; taking up refuse for removal.-Road refuse is swept by the rear-end part of a diagonal road brush a into a casing c cleared by a second or transfer brush e which raises the refuse into a casing cleared by another transfer brush f and so on into a receptacle h. An auxiliary casing o receives the refuse swept by the forward part of the diagonal brush and is cleared by a screw conveyer p delivering to the inner side of the casing c. The casings are provided with hinged pans n, q which are raised at intervals to discharge any sweepings retained on them into the casings. The pans also serve to close the casings when it is desired to sweep wet refuse into the gutters. The apparatus is adapted for ready attachment to any ordinary motor chassis.
