Abstract

380,596. Road-sweeping machines. LEWIN, W. J., Sunny dale, Barwick Road, Scholes, near Leeds. June 11, 1932, No. 26137/31. [Class 107.] A road sweeping-machine comprises a rotary brush 1 delivering to a casing 3 which is provided with a helical conveyer 4 for carrying the heavier refuse to an elevator 5. discharging into a compartment 6, whilst the dust and lighter matter is withdrawn from the casing 3 by an air current and delivered to a separate compartment. The casing 3 may contain right and left-handed helical conveyers 4 delivering to the casing 5x of the elevator 5. Dust and other light matter is drawn out of the casing 3 through flexible pipes 9 by a fan 10 which delivers into compartments arranged at each side of the compartment 6. Such compartments may contain water and the dust is then delivered in close proximity to, or below, the surface of the water. Canvas bags may be substituted for the water for retaining the dust. The casing 3 and brush casing 2 are pivotally mounted at the lower end of the elevator 5 and are maintained in proper relationship with the ground by a trailing wheel 21. The casings 2, 3 are adapted to be raised by winding gear 21x. The brush 1 is hung from an unbalanced lever 18 carried by a bracket 19 on the casing 2, and minor adjustments in the height of the brush may be effected by a screw 20. The fan 10, elevator 5, and conveyors 4 are adapted to be driven from the driving motor of the vehicle.
