Abstract
212,742. Ericsson, C. O., and Dunker, L. H. A. March 15, 1923. Cooling air and mercury.-Air to be cooled is passed through a conduit a, Fig. 1, across which extend a number of vertical tubes d communicating with lower and upper tanks b, c. Mercury passes by gravity from the upper to the lower tank through the tubes and is returned by a pump f. Water for cooling the mercury is circulated in the lower tank, and the upper tank may be partly fitted with water or oil to cool the mercury further or to clear it. To economize mercury, partitions k are provided in the upper tank. In a modification, Fig. 4, the mercury is passed through U-shaped tubes d arranged in the water, and is pumped from a subsidiary tank c<1> to the main tank c.
