Abstract
537,252. Sodium bicarbonate. OSWALD, A. M. July 18, 1939, No. 20904. [Class 1 (ii)] In the ammonia-soda process an ammoniacal salt solution is conducted, in counter-current to carbon dioxide - containing gases, through two towers free from baffle plates or other fillers, the solution being continuously pumped from the lower part of the first tower to such a level in the second tower that there will be above the liquid enough space for the froth formed, which may be carried wholly or partly with the gases into the first tower. As shown, ammoniacal salt solution enters tower 1 by the pipe 3, and is pumped by the pump 6 through the pipe 4 into tower 2, which it leaves by pipe 8 to be filtered. Gas enters tower 2 by pipe 7, passing through the liquid and forming froth above it ; froth and gas pass through pipe 5 to the bottom of tower 1, and leave it by pipe 9. Tower 1 may be higher than, e.g. twice as high as, tower 2.
