Abstract

Balancing; systems depending on the use of two or more machines.-When a number of generators are run with their separately excited fields connected in series, automatic means are provided for keeping the resistances of the fields substantially equal so as to prevent disturbance in case one of the generators is switched out. The Figure shows the arrangement of an automatic substation having mains 1 fed by two generators 4, 14 with field-windings 5, 15 connected in series in a closed circuit containing exciters 11, 21. Rheostats 6, 16 associated with the respective field windings are varied automatically by reversible motors 8. 18, one of which responds to rise and fall of pressure in the mains 1, while the other is so controlled by a balanced relay 39 as to make the resistance 16 equal to the resistance 6.
